Rauha Mäkilä is a Helsinki-based artist whose colour-saturated paintings depict recognizable everyday moments shared with family and close friends. Their warm, unhurried atmosphere lends them a sense of intimacy, while the figures emerge as active protagonists, free to act and define their own paths. Her works also incorporate references to popular culture and its imagery. Characterised by a direct visual language, her paintings combine a fresh palette with large, clean-lined planes of colour. The interiors are intentionally pared down, bringing the figures’ personalities and emotional presence to the fore.
Rauha Mäkilä (b. 1980) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in 2007 and also studied at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. She has exhibited widely in Finland and internationally, including at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, USA; EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art; Landskrona Museum in Sweden; and Aboa Vetus Ars Nova in Turku. Her works are held in numerous collections, including those of the City of Gothenburg, HAM Helsinki Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, the Saastamoinen Foundation, the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, and the Niemistö Foundation.
